The Two Most Important Commandments 6.6.17
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
Matthew 22:37-39
Jesus made it clear when asked, “which is the greatest commandment.” The pharisees were trying to catch Jesus up. They were trying to test the teacher — idiots. Anyway, He shot it to them straight.
Love God.
Love others just like you love yourself.
When all we do is filtered through our love for God and our love for others — our selfish, sinful desires disappear and obedience to our Father just happens. These two commands don’t come natural, that’s for sure. It has to be an intentional, everyday (multiple times a day, for me!) decision.
In all things, we should act in love. Like letting the car cut ahead of you in traffic without being super annoyed. They might be late picking their kid up from school, you never know! (This is one of the areas I was convicted — FYI. I can get real feisty behind the wheel.)
Today, let’s focus our thoughts, actions and emotions on fully loving Jesus and showing his love to others. Even when they aren’t being the most loving! Just remember, we all have our days.
