Living Fulfilled, No Matter What 5.2.17

“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.  I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.  I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:11-13 (NIV)

Verse 13 is one of the most popular passages in the bible. Growing up, I remember a locker room poster with this verse on it. I thought it was telling me that I could jump higher, score more points and run faster through Christ. In some versions, it says, “I can do all things through Christ…”.  But what does “ALL THINGS” really mean? After studying the scripture more in depth, I have a better understanding of what the author truly was trying to get across.

When Paul was writing this scripture, he was in jail for refusing to worship other gods.  Imagine the prisons back in the day. They were dark, filthy, crawling with bugs and typically, the prisoners starved to death. But Paul was content. He is literally telling us in verse 12 that he learned the secret of contentment. The only way to live fulfilled is through Jesus.  Life brings trouble, no matter what season you are in. There’s going to be hard times. And the enemy loves to remind us of how terrible our situation is. Don’t fall for his tricks; align your thoughts with the One who is guiding and protecting you.

Life could be strolling right along or you could be captain of the struggle bus. Regardless of your situation, hard times will come in your life. Paul knew first hand how it felt to be sick and tired … his secret to finding strength was leaning into his Father. Today, I pray you call on Jesus. He is just waiting for you to ask.
