“[Jesus] humbled himself.” Philippians 2:8

Read Phillipians 2:1-11 and look at what Paul tells the Philippians. He says, “Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.” (Phil. 2:4). He was stressing to them the importance of humility. Humility is defined in these passages as the quality of “being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit ” (v. 2). Being humble not only gives us a Christ-like attitude towards others, it unites us. And if dissension arises through disagreements among us, we can often diffuse them by giving up our need to be right.

When we are able to humble ourselves, it allows God to demonstrate His grace and gentleness through us. “With humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves” (v. 3). Practicing humility helps us to become more like Jesus who, for our sake, “humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (v. 8). Jesus is the ultimate example of humility. If we are able to follow that example it will lead to a life of genuinely caring for others more than we care about fulfilling our own interests. And in that way you will not only be a blessing to others, but you yourself will be blessed beyond measure.‬‬

Jesus died for you as the ultimate sacrifice. Ask Him to give you the sight to see and wisdom to recognize that putting others first is a direct reflection of His humility. Honor Him today by giving up selfishness and becoming of one spirit with those He has placed in your life.
