Heavenly Foundation 2.22.17
“For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:11
I absolutely LOVE how Facebook highlights memories posted “on this day” from years back. Yesterday, I was reminded of a very special day when I took a trip to Pisa, Italy with a group of strangers from Texas A&M. Among them was my future husband. Although the picture was of our entire group, it was the first of many photos of Ben and I together.
Of course, the background of the photo spotlights the Leaning Tower. As you may know, the tower’s unintentional lean was due to soft, silty soil on the northernmost side. Despite attempts to correct the tilt during construction, the tower continued to displace itself until recent preservation efforts. It had an inadequate foundation.
The Bible talks of a different, stable foundation: a heavenly foundation. The Lord Jesus came to our world from heaven. When He went back into heaven after His death and resurrection, His followers became the “living temple” of God, of which He is the cornerstone. The apostle Paul says, “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 3:11).
The Leaning Tower of Pisa, which is the representation of the neighboring cathedral, was destined to imperfection because of it’s unsturdy foundation. But the spiritual church (all believers) is founded on the ultimate heavenly foundation, Christ Jesus. 1 Cor. 10:4 says it plainly, “the rock is Christ.” Praise God that because of what Jesus has done our salvation is secure.
