Help for the Helpless 5.31.17
“Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the helpless honors him.” Proverbs 14:31
Last night the Deckers adopted our second rescue — sweet fur-baby Finn. We are absolutely over the moon in love with him. But as exciting as this time is, it has sparked some conversations between Ben and I. Why do I feel so passionately about saving all the helpless dogs, yet harden my heart to the needs of helpless people? If we have enough resources to take care of two animals and don’t give towards humanitarian causes, where exactly are our priorities?
Every person needs support in one form or another. As brothers and sisters in the family of God, we have so many opportunities to share with and care for others. And God is right here in our midst giving us His grace and spiritual enablement to do so.
When we defend the vulnerable and the marginalized, we give them a chance to realize their potential. We show them real love, and in a small but significant way we reflect the very heart of Jesus. In practice for us, that looks like separate giving to an organization like Compassion International.
Today we are making a commitment to the helpless. We hope you would consider joining us in asking God to help us recognize the needs of people and stand with them. We need forgiveness for thinking that it’s “not our problem” and understanding to love others as He does.
