“A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1

Have you ever heard someone accused of being a “Judas?” Since the events of Christ’s crucifixion over 20 centuries ago, “Judas” has been used in literature, film and even still in everyday speech as a term meaning “backstabber.” Of course, we know that’s because Judas (one of the twelve apostles) betrayed Jesus to the chief priests in exchange for thirty silver coins. And although he had spent the past three years following Jesus as a witness to His miracles and probably a major contributor to the cause, this one sin represents his entire existence. His reputation is totally associated with betrayal.

The book of Proverbs frequently contrasts the reputations of wise and foolish people: “The memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot. . . . He who walks with integrity walks securely, but he who perverts his ways will become known.” (Proverbs 10:7,9) Solomon sums it up by saying, “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”

What do others associate you with? Are you choosing silver over loyalty to Christ with our reputations? We should seek a good name, not to honor ourselves, but to glorify Him whose name is above all names. He knows what is best for us, and desires to lead us in paths that are right and good.

As Easter approaches, ask Him to give you the courage to trust and to follow Him in the way of right living for Your name’s sake. That way, your actions will leave lasting memories on the people around you that point back to Jesus.
