You Can’t Hold My Baby Without the Tdap Shot: Here’s Why
Sounds pretty harsh, I know. But it’s that serious. The Tdap shot protects from three severe diseases; one being pertussis a.k.a. whooping cough. Whooping cough is an infection that inflames the lungs and airways and is very contagious.
The awareness for the need of the vaccine has heightened over the years but most are still unaware of how and why it so important. Especially for those who are about to be around a precious newborn.
I hope these reasons clearly explain why new mamas are making this a non-negotiable:
- Can cause death — especially for babies.
Most whooping cough deaths occur in infants younger than 3 months old. I promise, this infection is killing babies and yet, it is preventable. Not to mention, super easy to get. I got mine last year at Walgreens and my insurance paid for it. Win, win! - Typically caught by a family member or someone close.
Studies have shown that most infants are infected by someone close to them (76% – 83%), including parents, grandparents and caregivers. Not only do studies show, my doctor says. Last week at my appointment, my doctor (who has been practicing for 25+ years) made sure I was aware that all close family and friends must get the shot. Doctor’s orders! - The vaccine wears off.
You might have been vaccinated as a child, that’s the DTaP shot. But the protection wears off. CDC recommends getting the Td booster (Tdap) every 10 years, even for teens. - It takes 2-weeks to kick in.
Don’t wait until the last minute, get it now. The vaccination doesn’t reach its full potential until at least 2-weeks after given.
If everyone that comes around my baby gets the Tdap shot, her chances of catching whooping cough is almost zero. Why wouldn’t I make it a requirement? As parents, we are to protect our babies the best that we can. And this new mama is protecting my baby girl!
How do I get the shot, you might ask? Most doctor’s offices, pharmacies and clinics offer it. Not only is it quick and easy, it could save a baby’s life. Why wouldn’t one get it?
