Mary and the Lamb (part I) 4.18.17
“On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.” Luke 24:1
One of the most prominent women around Christ’s ministry here on earth is Mary Magdalene. In fact, Mary possibly spent more time with Jesus than any other woman in the gospels. Her devotion and faith are pillars to her character and over the next two days, I am diving deeper into the role she played in the resurrection story.
All four Gospel writers go to deliberate lengths to tell us that Mary and the other women not only stayed through the awful hours of crucifixion but made sure they knew where Jesus had been buried so they could come after the Sabbath and finish anointing the body. When we look at Mary Magdalene and the others, we see women who were completely committed to Jesus Christ even in the midst of their bitter grief.
When Sunday morning came, Mary took it upon herself to make sure that Jesus’ body was tended to. She took with her oils and linens to prepare Him for a proper Jewish burial. This is a picture of Mary continuing to serve the Messiah even after His death. She could have stayed home and mourned or even waited until later in the day to bring the spices to the tomb, but Mary had a servant’s heart. She rose BEFORE dawn to serve Christ and to honor him in the best way that she knew how.
Service to God is never done in vain. When you bring your first and best to Him, He blesses what you have left. Mary understood the importance of this better than anyone. What do you have to lay at His feet today?
Come back tomorrow to learn more about how God used Mary Magdalene to carry out His will and illustrate an authentic faith from a servant’s heart.
