The Night Sky 5.8.17
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge” Psalm 19:1-2
This weekend, for Mother’s Day, Ben and I are heading up to Missouri to spend time with my family. Needless to say, I could not be more excited. It’s going to be a trip full of relaxation, baby niece snuggles, and stargazing in the hot tub. My parents live in the middle of the country where the night sky is completely clear and lit up with stars. Coming from the city, we treasure that time under the stars when we’re home.
Some nights as we sit in the hot tub, I think about another stargazer. Centuries ago, a Jewish shepherd boy looked up at the night sky and also marveled. I imagine the sheep quietly bleating in the background (instead of tree frogs) as David gazed skyward. Later he would write the inspired text: “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge.” Just like David, we can feel so small when admiring the greatness of His hand.
In our busy schedules, we can so easily forget to stand in awe of the heavenly beauty our Creator has prepared for our enjoyment and His glory. When we set aside time to look at the night sky and marvel at what is there, we gain a deeper understanding of God and His eternal power and glory.
I am going to be intentional about stopping to take and delight in His wondrous creation this week. Will you join me?
